For: The World Bank, 1998 This paper discusses the current conditions in the Republic of Georgia. It examines how few elements exist in the country that would foster the growth of the private sector. It also provides a brief overview of recent economic developments and a discussion of the structure of the economy and the sources of the rapid growth over the past 2 - 3 years. In section 3 there is an analysis of the privatization program and its shortcomings. Section 4 examines the main factors and constraints that affect the environment for doing business and discusses the growth of the enterprise sector in some detail. In conclusion, some observations are made regarding the appropriate direction of future policy. |
